Book Description
“An excellent overview on the huge cultural influence Hawaii actually had and still has.”—popcultureshelf.com “At last, someone takes Hawai’i seriously, combining a scholar’s eye and a fanatic’s devotion to showing how small islands in the middle of nowhere changed our world, making it a richer and better place.”—Jerry Hopkins, author, The Hula, Romancing the East and No One Here Gets Out Alive How did Hawaiian and Polynesian culture come to dramatically alter American music, fashion and decor, as well as ideas about race, in less than a century? It began with mainland hula and musical performances in the late 19th century, rose dramatically as millions shipped to Hawaii during the Pacific War, then made big leap with the advent of low-cost air travel. By the end of the 1950s, mainlanders were hosting tiki parties, listening to exotic music, lazing on rattan furniture in Hawaiian shirts and, of course, surfing. Increasingly, they were marrying people outside of their own racial groups as well. The author describes how this cultural conquest came about and the people and events that led to it.

Book Description
Women's Travel in Your Pocket is a lifeline to women's hotels, restaurants, discos, bars, feminist bookstores, lesbian centers, and lesbian hotlines across the globe, but that's just part of the story. The book's Calendar section lists hundreds of women's events, women's festivals, and mixed gaylesbian events worldwide, as well as departure dates for women's tours, resort vacations, and outdoor adventure trips. A special section describes the tour companies in detail, and a mail-order section includes a listing of all kinds of companies that tailor their products and services to women and lesbians. Compact enough to fit in a pocket or -- for "lipstick lesbians" -- a purse, it features unique national" gay-lesbian symbols that provide important details about bars and other business. Thoroughly revised, this 19th edition of Women's Travel in Your Pocket is astonishingly up-to-date, with listings added and/or revised as little as two weeks before press time.

Book Description
Here for the first time is a large collection of Hawaiian songs in an authoritative text with translation (music not included). The texts have never before been written consistently with the glottal stops (indicating syllabic breaks between vowels) and macrons (indicating long vowels and stresses) that make the words pronounceable by those unfamiliar with the Hawaiian language. Many of the songs have not been translated before or have only been freely adapted rather than translated. These 101 songs are all postmissionary and owe their musical origin to missionary hymns, although only a few are religious. None are technically chants, though some are chants that have been edited and set to music. They date from the mid-1850s (most are from the time of the monarchy) to 1968 (the date of Mary Kawena Pukui's translation of Christmas songs). Nearly all of these songs are sung today and are well known to Hawaiian singers. Included are love songs, and Christmas songs. There is an exhaustive introduction, which includes classification and arrangement of the songs; a note on the composers; and analysis of the structure, symbolism, and meanings of the songs; and a note on the translations and on the poetic vocabulary of the Hawaiian words.
